The only trouble is that if you practice them enough and you roll out your phrases at all the right moments, then the locals assume you’re more fluent than you are! This happens to me in Turkey all the time … they ramble on in Turkish, and I stand there with a blank stare on my face because I haven’t got a clue… but one of my stock phrases is “I’m sorry – I don’t speak Turkish” … and then they get a blank look on their face, because I’ve just rolled out a perfectly formed sentence in Turkish. These exchanges usually end up in laughter from both sides and then we muddle through with the odd word and sign language … I think learning a few words is essential .. and if you’re not willing to give it a go, then you shouldn’t travel. Thanks for all of your Spanish phrases … I’m armed and ready for a trip to SA now.
